Rococo Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. A set of dishes made in Italy during the 80s, as attested by the date printed on the back of the plate, but inspired by 18th century porcelain, to be precise inspired by the "Saxon-style", a term which can be ascribed to the 18th-century Germanic tradition, according to which porcelain was made with reliefs similar to woven baskets. This vintage dinner service is produced by a historic Italian manufacturer "Richard Ginori" founded in Tuscany, in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, of which Gio Ponti was creative director for 10 years. After declaring bankruptcy in 2013, this historic porcelain factory, in operation since 1735, was taken over by the Gucci group which restarted the production of iconic pieces and novelties inspired by archive pieces of the company. This set of dishes is a rarity as it is the result of an unusual combination that has the 18th century as its common thread, with the Rococo style, the scientific discoveries and the new botanical varieties resulting from the new trade routes of the companions of the Indies. On the classic Richard Ginori series, i.e. the total white motif called "Vecchio Ginori" (currently put back into production by Gucci) always and exclusively produced in total white, a botanical print by Abraham Munting depicting an orange plant was printed. Abraham Munting is a Dutch botanist famous for his unusual illustrations where plant species were depicted against a background of classic or pastoral landscapes, often floating in midair with little regard for perspective and relative sizes, in fact, the orange plant is not forced to inside the center of the plate but goes outside the predefined spaces wrapping it.
